Governor Barbour Presents FY 2011 Executive Budget Recommendation
November 16, 2009 - Governor Haley Barbour today proposed a 12 percent budget reduction for most state agencies and called for the merger of some state agencies, universities and school districts in his Executive Budget Recommendation for Fiscal Year 2011.
Mississippi Department of Health Flu Update
November 13, 2009 - The Mississippi State Department of Health continues to monitor and investigate human cases of a new type of influenza, H1N1 swine influenza (also known as "novel H1N1 influenza") now present in Mississippi. 1,250 Mississippi cases of H1N1 swine flu have been identified since May 15.
MDA Joins Energy Training Network
November 4, 2009 - The Mississippi Development Authority’s (MDA’s) Energy Division is one of several partners in the creation of a Southern Solar Energy Training Network in the Southeast. The network is part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) efforts to invest in solar workforce development and is being created through the University of Central Florida’s (UCF’S) Florida Solar Energy Center.


Commissioner Spell Seeking Aid for Farmers
November 3, 2009 - Mississippi farmers are experiencing devastating crop losses due to the record rainfalls during September and October causing crop yields and quality to be severely affected. Current crop conditions show very poor quality and yield for farms which, in some cases, leave farmers only very low discounted prices or total crop loss.
October Energy Awareness Month
October 1, 2009 - Governor Haley Barbour has proclaimed October as Energy Awareness Month in the state of Mississippi. An official proclamation was presented to the Mississippi Development Authority's (MDA'S) Energy Division as part of the U.S. Department of Energy's October Energy Awareness Month Program, "A Sustainable Energy Future: Putting All the Pieces Together."

September 30, 2009 - For the first time since 1910, the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History Archive Center is acquiring work about Mississippi, by a Mississippian.
Commission Awarded Grant for Wireless Network
September 28, 2009 - A $19.4-million grant has been awarded to the Mississippi Wireless Communication Commission to help build the Mississippi Wireless Integrated Network, an interoperable wireless network for first responders.
MDOT Offers Back-to-School Safety Tips
September 15, 2009 - With the start of a new school year already in session, parents and drivers are urged to pay close attention when traveling in and near school zones. Watching out for children particularly during rush hour will keep them safe while in transit to school.
Secretary of State releases 2009 Municipal Elections Report
September 14, 2009 - As required by law, Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann is releasing the 2009 Municipal Elections Report, which details observations noted in during the municipal election. A total of 32 observers were dispatched to 21 municipalities throughout the State. Their specific findings are included in the report.
Governor Barbour Demonstrates New Emergency Radio System
August 29, 2009 - Governor Haley Barbour today conducted the first public demonstration of a new wireless emergency communications network designed to allow officials and first responders to communicate quickly and effectively in times of crisis.
Mississippi Boosts Access to Court Documents
August 27, 2009 - Mississippi officials unveiled the state’s new electronic court document filing system on Thursday, saying the program will increase public access and streamline procedures for judges and attorneys.
Employers Say E-Verify Easy to Use
August 24, 2009 - Implemented and enforced by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Customs and Immigration Services with the help of Social Security Administration, there are more than 141,000 employers enrolled in the program. As of Aug. 8, more than 7 million queries have been run through the system this fiscal year, according to the DHS Web site.

Blues Trail to Feature Oldest African-American Neighborhood in Greenwood
July 13, 2009 - Baptist Town, established in the 1800s in tandem with the growth of the local cotton industry and one of Greenwood’s oldest African American neighborhoods, is the site of the newest marker dedication on the Mississippi Blues Trail. Ceremonies will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at 200 Short Street in Greenwood.
DOE Approves Mississippi's State Energy Plan
July 6, 2009 - This week, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) approved the State of Mississippi's State Energy Plan (SEP) and awarded approximately $16 million to the state to begin administering the plan as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

June 18, 2009 - U.S. Representative Gregg Harper (R-Miss.) joined the Mississippi Poultry Association to announce that Mississippi's Third Congressional District leads the nation in poultry production, according to recently released data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's 2007 Census of Agriculture.

June 17, 2009 - In a press conference today, the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) announced their unanimous decision to name Dr. Hank Bounds, current State Superintendent of Education, the next Commissioner of Higher Education.

March 26, 2009 - Congress has enacted an unprecedented economic stimulus package to help shore up state budgets and create jobs, among other goals. It has been estimated the State of Mississippi will receive up to $2.8 billion from the federal government and Governor Barbour's administration is gathering information on the individual programs and applications as details are developed.

March 23, 2009 - Management oversight of the Mississippi long-term recovery office set up after Hurricane Katrina will transfer from Biloxi to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's regional office in Atlanta.

March 19, 2009 - The Mississippi Gulf Coast population continues to lag behind levels before Hurricane Katrina hit Aug. 29, 2005, according to U.S. Census Bureau population estimates released today.

Old Capitol Museum Holds Grand Re-Opening
February 7, 2009 - The structure has been standing since 1839. It was Mississippi's Capitol building until 1903, and until 2005 visitors could enter and tour the old chambers. Then Hurricane Katrina came through, ripping off the roof and causing enough damage to shut it down. Three and a half years later it's open again, and it's a better museum than ever.

February 2, 2009 - Governor Haley Barbour announced today that Alliant Techsystems Inc. (NYSE: ATK) will manufacture composite structures for next-generation commercial aircraft at its Iuka, Mississippi, facility.
